Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) offers a range of legal services to help people trying to enter or stay in Canada as a refugee or immigrant. The Society advises the Attorney General on all aspects of legal aid in Ontario. The Corporation is composed of the members of its Board of Directors appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Attorney General. The Council is composed of 11 persons appointed for a specified term. Five of these individuals are selected by the Attorney General from a list of individuals recommended by the Law Society of Ontario. One of them is appointed Chair of the Committee by the Lieutenant Governor of Council on the recommendation of the Attorney General in consultation with the Law Society of Ontario. If one or more seats are vacant on the Board, the other members may exercise all the powers of the Board of Directors if they constitute a quorum of the fully constituted Board.
