REAL ID is a coordinated state and federal effort to combat terrorism, identity theft and other crimes by strengthening the integrity, accuracy and security of the driver`s license and ID issuance process. The REAL ID Act was part of the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror and the Tsunami Relief Act and was passed by the U.S. Congress in 2005. In almost every state, it is illegal to carry two government-issued driver`s licenses. If you`re moving to a new state, you`ll need to get a license from your new state and surrender the license from the state you recently left. 12. What if I don`t currently have a REAL ID-compliant Texas driver`s license or ID card and don`t do anything until May 3, 2023? Yes, a TPS beneficiary can obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or ID card. The Secretary of Homeland Security may designate a foreign country for TPS because of conditions in the country that temporarily prevent nationals of the country from returning safely, or under certain circumstances when the country is unable to adequately manage the return of its nationals. USCIS may grant TPS to eligible nationals of certain designated countries (or parts thereof) already located in the United States. Eligible persons without nationality who were last ordinarily resident in the designated country may also receive TPS.
All Texas driver`s licenses and identifiers, compliant (asterisk) and non-compliant (no asterisk), are valid until the expiration date indicated on the card. If you use your card after 10 years. October 2016 and having a gold star in the right corner, your card is REAL ID compliant and no further action is required on your part. You can continue to use your compliant card for federal identification purposes until it expires. Most residents can replace their licence, ID card or licence online or at a self-service station. If you are not authorized to do so, go to a State Department to provide an official document proving your identity (e.g., certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, valid military ID card, etc.). You will receive a temporary piece of paper identification that you can use until your replacement arrives in the mail. You can track the processing of your credentials through your online account with the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

We recommend that you renew your license or ID earlier. In most cases, you can always do this up to six months in advance. You may be able to renew online, by mail or at a self-service station. State Plus Driver`s Permits (EDLs) designated by DHS as acceptable border crossing documents under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) are acceptable for official federal purposes (e.g., boarding a commercial aircraft, accessing a federal facility, or entering a nuclear power plant). However, the presence of an EDL is not sufficient to consider the state globally compliant in determining whether a federal agency can accept a state`s regular driver`s license for official purposes. For example, a federal agency may accept a PC Plus issued by one state, but not be able to accept a standard driver`s license from the same state. The REAL ID Act Modification for Freely Associated States Act applies only to citizens of freely associated states and allows them to obtain full-time REAL ID licenses. Other categories of non-U.S.
citizens Citizens in “temporary legal status” as defined in the REAL ID regulations are still entitled to a temporary (temporary) REAL ID-compliant driver`s license or an identity card valid for no longer than the duration of the authorized stay in the United States or, if there is no definitive end of the duration of the authorized stay, year. These categories of persons with “temporary legal status” within the meaning of the REAL ID regulations include a person who is not an immigrant; has lodged a pending application for asylum; has submitted a pending or approved application for Temporary Protected Status; approved deferred action; or has applied for legal permanent residence or conditional permanent resident status. REAL ID allows compliant states to issue driver`s licenses and ID cards if the applicant`s identity cannot be secured or for which legal presence is not established. In fact, some states currently issue non-compliant cards to undocumented people. Non-compliant cards must clearly indicate on their front (and in the machine-readable area) that they are not acceptable for REAL identification purposes, and they must use a unique design or colour to distinguish them from compliant cards. DHS cautions against the assumption that possession of a non-compliant card indicates that the holder is an undocumented person, as individuals can obtain non-compliant cards for many reasons unrelated to legal presence. Possession of a non-compliant card does not mean that the holder is an undocumented person, as individuals can obtain non-compliant cards for many reasons unrelated to legal presence. The reasonable validity period of the driver`s license or ID card is the normal state expiration period for REAL ID-compliant documents and bears the same compliant markings with no additional language. The REAL ID Act Modification for Freely Associated States Act amends the REAL ID Act to separate citizens of commoncommonwealth from classes of non-U.S. citizens. Citizens who are only eligible to obtain a temporary (temporary) REAL ID-compliant driver`s license or an ID card whose validity period does not exceed the duration of authorized stay in the United States or, if there is no definitive end of authorized residence, one year.
With this amendment, citizens of freely associated states who provide acceptable proof of identity and legal status under the REAL ID Act and its implementing regulations should now receive a full driver`s license or ID card, rather than a temporary card. If a probation officer changes his or her status, he or she must reapply. Anyone who receives a temporary REAL ID can reapply for regular REAL ID at any time if their status changes. (1) A state shall verify with all other states whether the applicant currently holds a driver`s license or REAL ID card in another state. The Texas driver`s license and identity issuance process meets these standards. These requirements are not based on age, but on the security of the process of issuing the driver`s license and identity card. The applicant must demonstrate the traceability of the name, i.e. a link between the name on the source document and the name to be indicated on the issued document.
