Student Legal Aid – Student Legal Assistance Calgary provides legal information and representation to low-income residents of the Calgary area. These services are provided by law students at the University of Calgary. SLA assists in civil matters, criminal offenses, landlord/tenant cases, traffic offenses, family matters (other than divorce), minor claims, social assistance/AISH/employment insurance, academic and non-academic student appeals, and administrative court work. Pro Bono Students Canada (PBSC) Pro Bono Students Canada is a national network of law schools and community organizations that bring together law students and non-governmental organizations, government agencies, courts and legal clinics throughout the school year. PBSC has chapters in the law faculties of the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta. Provides legal information and assistance to the Alberta Human Rights Commission to complainants and respondents. In addition to providing pro bono legal advice to low-income Edmontonians, SLS also allows students to gain valuable hands-on experience working with real clients while mastering their legal skills and creating their professional resumes. Alberta Law Libraries Alberta Law Libraries are a provincial network of law libraries that provide research support and information services to the legal community, self-represented litigants and all Albertans. Libraries are located in courthouses and provincial buildings across the province and are open to the public. Canadian Legal Information Institute (CanLII) CanLII is a not-for-profit organization that operates and maintains a website dedicated to continuous access to a virtual library of Canadian legal information. This website provides access to court decisions, court decisions, laws and regulations of all Canadian jurisdictions.
Legal Line Legal Line is a not-for-profit organization that provides access to the laws under which Canadians are governed. It is a searchable database of Canadian laws that provides answers in 40 major areas of law in 107 languages. It also offers a hotline that provides pre-recorded answers to common legal questions and live help from subject matter experts. Women`s Centre Legal Advice Clinic Volunteer lawyers offer free half-hour legal advice sessions to women. These meetings aim to provide a starting point for access to the legal system. Clinics deal with family matters, civil matters, immigration and other types of law, but not criminal law. All women are welcome; Appointment required. Provides provincial court legal information and assistance to persons charged with minor and quasi-criminal offences (impaired driving, assault, theft under $5,000 or more).
Calgary Legal Guidance Calgary Legal Guidance provides legal information and advice to low-income individuals who cannot afford a lawyer and are not eligible for legal aid. It can help with a variety of issues, including but not limited to family, criminal and civil matters. Free legal clinics are open Monday to Thursday evenings. Juvenile Law at The Alex – Calgary CLERC provides legal advice, information, representation, referrals and services to children and youth. CLERC`s lawyers represent youth under the age of 19 in areas such as family matters, immigration, estates and inheritance, employment issues, landlord and tenant issues, human rights issues, education issues and guardianship issues. CleRC does not represent youth involved in criminal cases or who have access to legal services through child welfare. Edmonton Community Legal Centre The Edmonton Community Legal Centre provides free legal information and advice to low- and middle-income people in the Edmonton area who cannot afford a lawyer and are not eligible for legal aid. It can help with legal issues such as family law, landlord and tenant issues, employment, human rights, debt, small claims, immigration and income support. ECLC does not provide criminal services. Provides legal information and help to support children and partners, basic parent requests, uncontested divorces, and more.

As an Indigenous law student, spend four months at Legal Aid Alberta to familiarize yourself with child welfare, family, youth and criminal law. Law Society of Alberta The Law Society of Alberta regulates the legal profession in the public interest by promoting and enforcing high standards of professional and ethical conduct by Alberta lawyers. The Law Society can help members of the public find a lawyer, search for records and wills, and answer questions about lawyers` conduct. Lawyer Referral Service The Lawyer Referral Service provides you with contact information for up to three lawyers who will review legal services that could help you. If you talk to any lawyer, the first half hour of the conversation is free. You shouldn`t expect the lawyer to do free work during this time – that means discussing your legal situation and exploring your options. The Federation of Law Societies of Canada is the national coordinating body for the 14 law societies mandated by provincial and territorial law to regulate Canada`s 125,000 lawyers, Quebec`s 3,800 notaries and Ontario`s 10,500 independent paralegals in the public interest. Provides legal information through community outreach programs, presentations and research on various legal issues related to poverty. BLG Venture Clinic students can write memoranda on topics such as early financing, the pros and cons of different business structures, employment issues, intellectual property, and possible sources of accountability. Lethbridge Legal Guidance Lethbridge Legal Guidance provides free legal aid, information and advocacy to people with financial difficulties who require legal advice and representation and are not eligible for legal aid.
Pro bono lawyers provide legal information and advice on a variety of topics, including family, civil matters, labour law, criminal law and immigration law. Free clinics operate on Tuesday evenings. Student Legal Services of Edmonton (SLS) is a student-run, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to supporting low-income individuals and University of Alberta students who have had access to justice in Edmonton since 1969. Student volunteers at the University of Alberta`s Faculty of Law provide free legal information and freedom of choice in court to those who would otherwise not be able to afford these services. SLS provides support in the areas of civil, criminal and family law, and provides legal education awareness and research support services to not-for-profit organizations. Legal Aid Alberta Legal Aid Alberta provides legal assistance to Albertans who meet the financial eligibility guidelines. All young people have the right to representation in criminal matters. Legal aid covers serious criminal charges, family law issues, child welfare issues, immigration and refugee applications, adult guardianship and income support. Please note that Legal Aid does not currently provide support for many civil law matters, including personal injury, medical malpractice, etc. Grande Prairie Legal Guidance Grande Prairie Legal Guidance provides free legal information and advice to low- to middle-income individuals who have a legal problem but are not eligible for legal aid.
It can help with issues such as family law, landlord and tenant issues, employment, debt/contract, circulation/settlements, wills and estates, criminal law and civil law. GPLG does not provide representation in court. Alberta Centre for Public Legal Education (CPLEA) CPLEA is dedicated to providing information about the law in readable and understandable language to Albertans. It maintains a number of websites with legal information in many areas. Medicine Hat Legal Aid Centre The Medicine Hat Legal Aid Centre provides free information and advice to people with low access to intermediaries who have a legal problem but are not eligible for legal aid. It can help with issues such as family law, labor issues, debts and foreclosure, estate and administration, estate/life planning, immigration issues, landlord-tenant disputes, and civil matters. Public Interest Law Clinic – University of Calgary The Public Interest Law Clinic is a legal clinic of the University of Calgary`s Faculty of Law that was founded to advocate for systemic change that values and promotes the well-being of the public and the environment We offer four students enrolled in this University of Alberta course, a community internship of 196 hours of work in family, juvenile or adult criminal law. The Alberta Limited Legal Services Project is a local lawyers` initiative that aims to give Albertans access to the legal services they want, when they want, at a price they can afford. The project connects Albertans with lawyers who only help part of a case, not all, so you can pay for the services you want without a lawyer handling the case from start to finish.
