Job performance and health care improve with diversity, and evidence showing better health outcomes is likely to increase steadily, with a greater focus on diversity in practice and research. “Intersectionality” reflects the concept that combinations of social identity can impact oppression or privilege. It is imperative that diversity is taken into account in recruitment or selection (e.g. for school or training programmes), but also in terms of inclusion and belonging. To illustrate these concepts, diversity is like being invited to dinner; Inclusivity is about eating at the same table with the same range of food and dishes; Belonging means being able to eat as if you were in your own home.
