Barnes and Noble Book Signing Rules

Barnes and Noble Book Signing Rules

Over the years, David has written a total of five books about the adventures of his hero Danny Hoopenbiller. When you meet, you have these things with you: your book, a printed paragraph of what the book is about (on a piece of paper), and all the reviews of Goodreads or Amazon or elsewhere (condense them on a single sheet of paper as well). 12 books doesn`t sound like much for a dedication, but it`s a good number if you`re not James Patterson. If you have a variety that will also buy, then definitely be prepared to bring more. As in the case of David Lee, he leaves behind books that can be sold on commission. Josh connected the conference event with a group of authors. We did some social media for this on Facebook and IG: Barnes & Noble IS the emerald city. For anyone who loves books, there`s magic out there. When you walk through these many corridors, this special magic always happens. You don`t need to find the book.

The book will find you. 11. Never sit down unless it`s signing a book. Keep your phone quiet and out of sight. Ask any buyer of your book (and those who might later) to post a review on BarnesandNoble.com. Ask each buyer if they`re going to pose for a photo of the two of you, and you send them the photo. This allows you to achieve several things: you feel important. The passer-by who you asked to take the picture sees that it`s a big problem to have a book signed by you.

You will receive an email or Instagram address. They copy the store on every photo and reinforce their excellent decision to let you sign up in their store. Don`t be confused by the brand of “Kindle” in KDP. In this newly named service, KDP offers formatting and printing for paperbacks and e-books. Amazon offers you simple formatting tools and printing options. You also get a free ISBN number or you can order a bundle through Bowker. All you have to do is have an ISBN number for your book. Barnes & Noble won`t let you walk into the door without an ISBN number on your book. The ISBN is simply the global identifier of literary property.

I don`t want to blow my own horn, but the first thing you`ll need is a great cover and a way to make the book relevant by tapping into a bigger story. We made both with the memoirs of Paul Bad Karma. At around $25/day in ad spend, the book was already profitable (around $35/day) – since it`s not such a competitive category, it was easy to keep the #1 bestseller orange label (most travel writers/memoirs don`t have access to AMS ads and/or don`t know enough or don`t care enough about learning about advertising). DM: Good advice for the “shortlist” – it`s also important to note that they`re much more likely to listen to you if your book*is*correct and has online reviews. No one wants to take a risk for something uncontrolled, and they won`t have time to read your book. 10. Now that you`ve sown the area, you`re ready to settle in (without having to ask the store team for more). I always have a plate of cookies on my table. Place some of your postcards next to the cookies.

When people pick up a cookie, give them a postcard. If people show interest but are reluctant to approach, give them a postcard. Insert a postcard into each copy of your book. No one leaves your table without a postcard. Just because you`ve written a good book doesn`t mean people will find out. Even Emily Dickinson, long dead and buried, needed her sister Lavina to open the closet, sort through the poems and make the work known. It took Lavina four years. 14. The day after your signing event, send an email to the person who made it possible and thank them. Ask them if they can tell you how many copies were sold while you were there. If it went well, ask them if they would be bothered if you passed these numbers on to (another company you`re working on). Often, they take the opportunity to tell you the best person and/or company to turn to.

If they don`t, ask them. If you make them look good, they will be happy to point you in the right direction. He thought it would be helpful for me to talk to other local writers based on my experience in the film studio. I could talk about the books that make the transition to cinema. I said I would and suggested coming two hours earlier and signing a few copies of my latest book. That`s how I met David Lee and his family. The Lees came to the conference, but came earlier to the signing. I signed books for them. Did you know that Barnes & Noble is a pet-friendly retailer? You can bring your dog when shopping. Since my book is about a dog, I brought my corgi, Arthur, with me. Here he looks at David Lee.

I tell my friends that this was Arthur`s reaction when he learned that David was only 15 years old! My friend Steve Goerth of Rabbit Publishers has scheduled over 75 hours of signings at Barnes & Noble. He suggests that B&N likes to plan at least 6 to 8 weeks in advance. Prepare your calendar. When you talk to them, explain that you want to establish a signature for your book. By the way, this also works for company-owned authors who might reserve their own signatures. Let the community manager know that you want to come and discuss the event. Set a time or find out what days they will be (some work weekends and others not). 12. Whether it`s going well or not, if your energy level allows you to run beyond the official end time, ask the store if everything is fine if you stay. It`s about the attention your book receives. Get everything you can when the opportunity arises.

Well, here`s the secret sauce hidden behind the curtain for your B&N reservations: Every Barnes & Noble in America has a store-specific setting, called a community business development manager. DM: Half-time – if I had to do such an event, I would try to make sure the right people come; You can target *local* people interested in your topic/theme/gender with Facebook ads and share the details with them – you may need a strong hook or offer to lure people into the door. Don`t assume that people will just be there (even if people are there, the chances of them looking for you or your book are slim). 3. Introduce yourself as the author of your book and say that it is sold on B&N`s website and that it is also set up correctly in their system to be taken to their store, as a guaranteed buyback. The store will pay you directly if you completed the signature that day in a “withdrawal” from the registry, or if it`s more than $100, they may choose to send you a check. Always make sure to get in and out of customer service. As a company, B&N is very well managed. The verification takes place within 30 days or less.

Along the way, I`ve met several authors with self-published books who also sign with Barnes & Noble. They are serious about their work and want to inform them about it. I respect them. I loved each of them. They all said it wasn`t easy to find the data needed to set up the signatures. David Lee also signs his books with Barnes & Noble. He also has his book on the shelves of the store. Which brings me to my other point; Sometimes an event is more important for social media posting, story, or photos – not necessarily the books sold. Go inside and look for great author photos.

Online, it will be as successful as you make it appear. Meet David Lee. He is 15 years old. He wrote and illustrated his first book, Danny and Portal of the World at the age of 7. He is sociable, intelligent and hardworking. David is full of ideas. It is also full of energy. Just last week, he won first prize at his school`s talent show for his vocal interpretation of Elton John`s Crocodile Rock. It`s ironic, isn`t it? Two competing companies in the book market work together to support you.

By the way, physical books tend to increase. Despite the convenience of electronic tablets, the consumer still prefers a paper book in his hands. Research also shows that we remember more when we read from a book of sheets of paper. 9. If your B&N has a Starbucks inside, inform the manager that you are running a book signing promotion at the main store and whether it is acceptable to leave some of your postcards at the checkout and/or pickup station. Go to each of the trash can/tray return cabinets in the Starbucks seating area and leave a few postcards on it. Note: Publisherauthorinquiry@bn.com is not intended for barnes & Noble Press policy departments or inquiries, as it is a separate program that allows authors to publish e-books and physical books themselves. Inquiries to Barnes & Noble Press should be directed to BNPressSupport@bn.com.

Customers can also be referred to press.barnesandnoble.com for more information. DM: This can be a big risk for a freelance writer – bookstores* could * order hundreds of copies, not sell them, then return them damaged and ask for a refund. But. This scenario is unlikely. They`re more likely to order a dozen copies for your event and see how it goes. Currently, Barnes & Noble is the largest retail bookseller in America with 630 stores spanning all 50 states. The company has become the leading book supplier in America. 45,000 I`ve done autographs in a dozen Barnes & Noble stores so far and I`ve already planned twenty more stores. Most of the agreements I have made have told me that they will welcome me signing again whenever I am ready for it. We only sold 12 copies during an autograph session and up to 22 (last Sunday). One thing seems true after every signing: My Kindle Sales Spike. I suspect that more and more people are shopping at physical booksellers to find out what they will buy later for their e-reader.

After completing his five-book series on Danny Hoopenbiller, David is now working on a new sci-fi trilogy. You can read more about him and Sister Laura here. We also need bibliographic information to list your books, as well as other content to promote each title. Find out how to submit bibliographic information as well as covers, reviews, catalogue copies, excerpts and more by clicking here. 7. Arrive at least an hour earlier on the day of signing and let them know that you will be back in time to settle in, tell them what they need to provide, etc.
